Salty creations from the Lucky Iron Artisan's Daughter
I recently received the cookbook Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat by Samin Nosrat. It is a full of food facts and science, recipes, tips and kitchen basics that will make me a more educated chef. As with many sciences, the more you understand how things work, the better your work with them can be. In reading the first chapter on salt, Samin highlights the need for a good salt bowl “…You should be able to fit all five fingers into your salt bowl and easily grab a palmful of salt.” (p. 41) I realized though I had several bowls I could use, I did not have one that I could dedicate for salt that would not look like a mixing bowl repurposed. And this is where our new salt bowls came into creation. I wanted a bowl that would be sturdy, not tip when I reached into it, and striking, it should look beautiful in the kitchen. Working on a lathe, we created several prototypes to get the bowl size correct and now have a solid design that we’ve put into several wood types.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the journey from the original salty idea through learning how to turn a bowl to seeing the creations come to life with their natural finish. I like to make things that are useful, eye-pleasing and that last a life time and the best part of it all is that I do it with my dad…I guess I’m the Lucky Iron Artisan’s Daughter!
